Breaking the Silence: WACA’s Menstrual Hygiene Awareness Campaign for Female Artisans

Breaking the Silence: WACA’s Menstrual Hygiene Awareness Campaign for Female Artisans

At WACA, we believe true empowerment starts with dignity, education, and access to basic health essentials. Continuing our mission to support and uplift the women behind our crafts, we recently conducted a Menstrual Hygiene Awareness Campaign for our female artisans and their daughters — the true torchbearers of tradition and creativity.

The session was led by the passionate and insightful Sanaa Munjal, who created a warm and welcoming space for open dialogue around menstrual health. For many in the room, it was the first time they could speak freely about a topic that has long been burdened with shame and silence.

What the session covered:

  • The biological science behind menstruation

  • Importance of menstrual hygiene and proper care

  • Debunking myths and taboos surrounding periods

  • How to use and dispose of sanitary napkins safely

  • Building confidence and comfort around the topic, especially for young girls

The energy in the room was electric — from curious questions to heartfelt sharing, the session sparked a much-needed conversation that we hope will ripple into homes and communities.

Going Beyond Awareness

We didn't want the learning to end with the session. As part of our commitment to the well-being of our artisans, WACA has officially mandated the monthly distribution of sanitary napkins, free of cost, to all our female artisans.

Access should never be a barrier to hygiene. By providing this essential support, we aim to ensure that our women can work, create, and thrive — without worry, discomfort, or stigma.

Why It Matters

Menstruation is not a luxury — and managing it shouldn’t be either. In many underserved communities, a lack of awareness and access can lead to infections, absenteeism from work or school, and a loss of self-esteem. With this initiative, WACA takes a small but significant step toward changing that reality.

We are immensely proud of the women who attended, asked questions, supported one another, and reminded us that change begins with courage.

Here’s to health, dignity, and continuing to build spaces where our artisans don’t just create — they flourish.
